How Much Does a Domain Name Cost in South Africa? 2026 Price Comparison

A .co.za domain name costs about R99 to R110 a year at most South African registrars in 2026, and a .com costs roughly R255 to R300 a year. The renewal price is what you will pay every year after that, so check it before you buy, and remember that a domain on its own does not give you email or a website.

This guide compares current prices at the big South African providers, explains the difference between registration, renewal and transfer fees, and shows what a domain really costs once you add the email and hosting you actually need.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the unique address that identifies your business on the internet. It is made up of a name and an extension. In yourbusiness.co.za, "yourbusiness" is the name and ".co.za" is the extension.

For example, Google's domain name is google.com. When someone types google.com into a browser, they land on Google's website. Domain names exist so people do not have to remember the string of numbers (the IP address) behind every website.

You never buy a domain outright. You rent the right to use it, usually one year at a time. If you renew, it stays yours. If you let it expire, someone else can register it.

How much does a domain name cost in South Africa in 2026?

We checked the published prices of six well-known South African providers in September 2026. These are the standard prices shown on each provider's own website for one year.

The short version:

• .co.za: R99 to R110 a year at most providers. Afrihost charges R197 for a new .co.za bought on its own, but only R99 to renew it.
• .com: R255 to R300 a year, with renewals often a little higher than the first year.
• Transferring a .co.za: free at most providers.

Why is a .co.za cheaper than a .com?

Every registrar pays a wholesale fee to the registry that runs the extension, then adds its own margin. The two extensions are run very differently.

• .co.za is South Africa's own extension. Its wholesale fee is set by the ZA Domain Name Authority (ZADNA) and charged in Rand. ZADNA links the fee to inflation (CPI) and adjusts it every October. For 2026 it announced a 6.2% increase from 1 October 2026, which takes the wholesale fee from about R65 to about R69 per domain per year. Expect many registrars to pass some of that on.
• .com is a global extension priced internationally. South African registrars convert that cost into Rand, so .com prices move with the exchange rate as well as with international price increases.

For a South African small business, a .co.za is usually the better choice anyway. It tells customers you are local, and short names are far more likely to still be available than on .com.

Registration vs renewal: what is the difference?

The registration price is what you pay in the first year. The renewal price is what you pay every year after that. Many people only look at the first number, which is exactly what promotional pricing is designed for.

Look at the table again and you will see three patterns:

• Renewal higher than registration. Domains.co.za and 1-grid charge R99 for a new .co.za and R109 to renew. That is a small jump, but on .com the gap can be bigger.
• Free first year with hosting. Hostking and Afrihost give you the .co.za free when you buy hosting. That is a genuine saving, but you then pay the normal renewal price for the domain (and the hosting) from year two.
• Renewal lower than registration. Afrihost is the unusual one: R197 to register a .co.za on its own, R99 to renew.

Over three years, the renewal price matters far more than the first-year price. A domain that is R20 cheaper this year but R30 more expensive every year after is not a bargain.

How much does it cost to transfer a domain?

Transferring a domain means moving it from one registrar to another, for example to get better support or to keep your domain and email in one place.

• .co.za transfers are free at Afrihost, xneelo, Domains.co.za and Register Domain SA.
• .com transfers usually cost about the same as one year's renewal (for example R269 at Domains.co.za and R255 at Register Domain SA). The good news is that the transfer normally adds a year to your registration, so you are not paying twice.

Before a transfer, check that the domain is not about to expire, that you can receive email at the registrant email address (you will need to approve the move), and that someone will update your email and website settings so nothing goes offline.

What affects the price of a domain name?

1. The extension. .co.za is the cheapest mainstream option. .com, .net and .org cost more. Newer extensions such as .shop or .store can cost several hundred Rand to over R1 000 a year.
2. The registrar. Each provider sets its own margin, which is why the same .co.za ranges from R99 to R197.
3. How long you register for. Since October 2024 the .za registry allows .co.za domains to be registered for up to five years at once, although many registrars still sell one year at a time. Paying for several years can protect you from price increases.
4. Premium names. Very short or popular names that someone already owns may be for sale on the aftermarket. These can cost thousands of Rand, far more than a normal registration.
5. Add-ons. Some registrars sell extras such as privacy protection, DNS services or website builders with the domain. Most small businesses do not need them.
6. Bundles. Many hosting and email packages include the domain, which can make the domain itself effectively free.

Which domain extension should a South African business choose?

Price differences between extensions are small in the bigger picture, so choose the extension that suits your customers first.

• .co.za is the best choice for most businesses that trade in South Africa. It is cheap, instantly recognised by local customers, and signals that you are a real South African business. A plumber in Pretoria or a salon in Durban rarely needs anything else.
• .com makes sense if you sell internationally, plan to expand beyond South Africa, or your exact name is available on .com but not .co.za.
• .org.za is meant for non-profit organisations, and costs about the same as .co.za.
• Newer extensions like .online, .shop or .africa can work for some brands, but they are less familiar to customers and are sometimes treated with more suspicion by spam filters.

Some businesses register both the .co.za and the .com to stop anyone else from using the name. That is sensible for an established brand, but a new small business can start with the .co.za and add the .com later.

Is a "free domain" really free?

Free domains are common in South Africa, and most are genuine. The domain is included because the provider earns from the hosting or email you buy with it. Just check three things:

• Is it free for the first year only? Many offers include the domain for year one, then bill it separately at the normal renewal price.
• What happens if you cancel the package? You should be able to keep the domain and move it elsewhere, paying only the normal renewal fee.
• Is the package itself good value? A free domain attached to expensive hosting is not a saving.

What happens if you forget to renew your domain?

When a domain expires, your website and your business email stop working. Clients who email you get bounce-back errors, and you may not notice until someone phones to ask why.

There is usually a short period during which you can still renew. After that, the domain goes into a redemption stage where getting it back is much more expensive. Domains.co.za, for example, lists a redemption fee of R215 for a .co.za and R1 039 for a .com. If you miss that window too, anyone can register the name.

Protect yourself by keeping your contact details up to date with your provider, switching on auto-renew if it is offered, and choosing a provider that reminds you before renewal.

The hidden costs: a domain is not a business email

This is where most people get caught out. Registering yourbusiness.co.za gives you the name only. To actually send and receive email from info@yourbusiness.co.za, you also need:

• Email hosting: a server that stores your mailboxes and handles spam. For example, Afrihost's email-only packages start at R64 a month (about R768 a year) and do not include the domain.
• Web hosting (only if you want a website): xneelo's hosting starts from R99 a month.
• DNS and security settings: MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records that tell the internet where your email lives and help stop your messages landing in spam.
• An SSL certificate for secure webmail and websites (often free, but someone must set it up).
• Setup on your devices: getting the mailbox working on your phone and in Outlook.
• Website design, if you want a site built for you.

So a realistic "do it yourself" first year for one business email looks more like this:

How to choose where to buy your domain

Price is only one part of the decision. Before you pay, check these points:

1. Check the renewal price, not just the first-year special.
2. Know what is included. Is it the domain only, or domain plus email and hosting?
3. Make sure the domain is registered to you or your business, not to a friend or a web designer who may be hard to reach later. It is worth asking any provider this directly.
4. Ask who sets up your email. If you are not technical, a cheap domain with no help can cost you days of frustration.
